My name is Joshua Altom. I am a senior
studying Mathematics. I plan to graduate in the spring of next
year.
One thing you need to know about me is
that I love my wife, Hannah Joy Altom. We met in the youth ministry at our
church when we were in high school, began dating after we graduated, engaged a
year after that, then tied the knot January of this year. She is absolutely
amazing! She’s so smart, talented, funny, caring, and she is by far the most
beautiful woman in the world. I’m incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful
wife.
Another thing you need to know is that I
love my lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without
Him. I serve at Lifechurch, both on the Host team and the worship team playing
acoustic guitar.
When I was a junior in high school, I
started working at Chick-fil-A as a team member. I worked there for five years and
worked my way up to management. It was a tremendous experience and a wonderful
company to work for. I have recently started working at FNB Community Bank. I’m
currently in training to be a teller there, and I’m excited about the new experience.
Whenever I am not busy with school or
work, I like staying home and watching movies with my wife. We’re big fans of
making popcorn in our Whirly Pop for a nice home-theatre experience. Some of my
favorite movies include: The Prestige, The Dark Knight trilogy, the original
Star Wars trilogy. Other times, we’ll visit family or friends, or go out for a
nice meal and a fun date. Also, both my wife and I are reading the Harry Potter
series for the first time. She’s much faster than I am, but we both really
enjoy them.

Hi Josh,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your introduction! It sounds like we have a lot in common- we are both married (or engaged in my case), actively involved in church and attempting to navigate the last few semesters of college! Which Lifechurch campus do you serve at? I have visited several different campuses when I was looking for churches a few years ago. My fiancé and I are now members at First Baptist Blanchard, but we truly enjoyed the Lifechurch services.
We serve at the Midwest City campus. My wife's father works at the Edmond campus, so we wind up there every now and gain.
DeleteHey there Josh!
ReplyDeleteI am also graduating in spring, and I cannot wait! Congratulations first and foremost on your wedding earlier this year and I send my best wishes. Hannah sounds like a wonderful woman. I bet being a teller is a much different experience than the management you did before, and I hope it goes good. I am a little jealous of your popcorn maker! The Prestige is a great film and I absolutely love The Dark Knight trilogy. Enjoy those Harry Potter books, they are in a league of their own.
It sounds like our movie interests overlap a lot, Joshua - and I thought The Prestige was one of the best movies I had seen in years, so strange but so involving at the same time. Every time I watch it, I notice new things about that one! And you'll see that I share Star Wars and Harry Potter stuff in the class announcements and through the class Twitter, etc., pretty often: they really are the myths of our time, and I think we can get a lot of insight into the myths of long ago by pondering just what those stories mean to us! So, I'm guessing this class will be a good match for you, and I am so curious to see which readings will grab your attention and what kind of project you want to do for the class. And for sure it sounds like you need to get your wife to join in on the brainstorming for your project so that you can work on something that you might enjoy reading together... reading and writing are always so much better when shared! (Hence the blogs in this class!) ... And congratulations on your marriage this year: it means 2014 is always going to be special to you both! Wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, there! You sound so passionate about your wife, faith, and life in general. It's really nice to hear! You reminded me that I haven't watched The Prestige yet. Somehow I already trust your tastes in movies, though, so I'm taking this post as another push to watch it. Lately I've been reading more than watching movies (my obsession at the moment is S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst. It's crazy!) and I feel like I need to mix it up a bit. haha Sounds like you're a hard worker so I'm sure you'll be one of those awesome people who graduates and has no problem figuring out what to do for a career. Which is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a fantastic semester! :)
Lily
Oh my goodness, Joshua!! I'm a movie connoisseur so how is it I've gone 8 years without knowing about the movie, The Prestige? I have amassed a collection of more than 3000 movies in my life and it's a growing collection. I too LOVE the Dark Knight and original Star Wars Trilogy. Did you hear that they're working on episode VII of Star Wars?? Not sure how I feel about that. My most recent movies I've purchased include Divergent and Transcendence.
ReplyDeleteI love that you and your wife are reading the Harry Potter series. I've read it a couple of times and they are fantastic. I'm an avid reader as well. I love the classics. I think it's beautiful that you are so passionate about your wife and the fact that the two of you seem to share so many things in common. You'll never run out of things to say to each other.
I too trust in Jesus Christ. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was searching for names for her. When I ran across Trinity, I was hooked. I knew that was her name. Everyone thinks I named her from the character in The Matrix, but no. I named her for the Holy Trinity. That little girl has been a blessing in my life and the reason for all that I do.
God Bless you and your family, Joshua!! I hope your education takes you to great places!! Good luck!!
I love how passionate you are about both your wife and your life in the Church! I also love that you and your wife love to sit and watch awesome movies! I mean this in the least weird way possible I swear, but I hope someday to be in a relationship like that! Being able to hang out with the one you love and watch or read things you both love, or at least love to laugh at! Your positive attitude about your job and your past job experiences are inspiring and I really wish you the best of luck in your new venture at the bank!
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua, nice to meet you! What Lifechurch do you go to? I go to the Moore campus and serve in LifeKids on Sunday mornings! Congrats on the recent marriage and upcoming graduation. I am also a Mathematics major. It's exciting to hear of other Math majors! Makes me happy to know there's other people out there that like Math as much as I do! Hope you enjoy your semester.
ReplyDeleteHey Joshua! First off, congratulations on your marriage earlier this year! That must have been really exciting. Also, it’s cool that you play an instrument. I’d love to know how to play guitar; I’ve only ever learned to play piano. Can you play any more instruments? By the way, that’s awesome that you’re reading the Harry Potter series, though it’s surprising that it’s for the first time. Which is your favorite book so far?
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your introduction! I have also started reading Harry Potter. I started this summer, but I have been so busy with homework, school, and work that I really do not have much free time to read for fun. I love how much you love your wife! It is so sweet. Congratulations on getting married in January!! I look forward to reading your story this week!
Joshua, how is being a math major? That is something I could never do. Math is something I try to avoid when possible. Congratulations on your marriage! It seems like you’re really happy, and that’s great! The Prestige is such a good movie! In my opinion, it’s hard to go wrong where Christian Bale is involved, but still. I also loved how David Bowie had a cameo as Tesla. Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteJoshua, you're making me hungry with your talk of popcorn and movies! I imagine making it in the Whirly Pop adds to the taste even if the effect is just psychological. And kudos for studying mathematics. Given my majors, microbiology and Italian, I have never had the time to take more calculus courses. Of course, I know there's much more than calculus, but you've got to give me a break! Haha.
ReplyDeleteMath major, wow! I took up to Calculus 2, and I cannot fathom going further than that. I think I would rather tale all the chemistry classes in the world than suffer through differential equations. The distinction of the original Star Wars trilogy made me laugh; the new films really can't hold a candle to the original ones, can they?
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua, I really enjoyed reading your introduction, mostly because of the pure passion that exudes from it! It is so great to meet people who are wholly satisfied with their lives. I am so happy that you have found happiness with your wife, faith, work, and hobbies.
ReplyDeleteI wish you the best of luck with your graduation coming up and with all of your other future endeavors!
Wow it sounds like you are pretty busy! It is so wonderful that you are involved in so many things outside of just school! Being a math major sounds very hard! What kind of work do you want to go in to with that major? The Harry Potter books are so fun and I think its great that you are reading them right now! Hope your semester is going well so far!
ReplyDeleteHey Josh!
ReplyDeleteI think you and I could be great friends. I am a bit of a Potterhead so if you and your wife have any questions or comments on the books/movies feel free to share! My roommate and I have recently started going to Lifechurch together and we really love it! I am glad to see you are so involved! I also met my boyfriend in my youth group and we have been together for almost four years! I think it is extremely important to be with someone that shares the same beliefs as you and you are extremely lucky to find someone with the same beliefs as you to share your life with!
I applaud you for being a mathematics major. Math’s just takes up so much time and understanding. Although I find myself enjoying it at times. Congratulations on your marriage. I too married my wife not to long after meeting. Wow, I think you have so much experience. Good for you and congrats on your job as a teller. I too, am a big movie fan. You and your wife seem to enjoy one of the things my wife and I enjoy. My wife is from England, so this summer she made me watch the harry potter series. Keep up the hard work.
ReplyDeleteJosh, I loved hearing the story about how you and your wife met. It's great that both you and your relationship is so deeply rooted in Christ. I'm pretty involved in my church as well. I've always really liked Lifechurch as it's pretty similar to the churches I've attended my whole life. You've actually just opened up a location across the street from my church in OKC (People's Church). Good choice in starting the Harry Potter series! ...though I must warn you that you're entering into a fandom now that has the potential to take over your life. Ha ha! But seriously I hope you enjoy it and good luck with your career pursuits!
ReplyDeleteHey Josh, it looks like we have a lot in common! I love that you and your wife met in youth ministry, because I was extremely involved in my youth ministry growing up too. I think its awesome that your faith is such an important part of your life, and that you're willing to share about it with complete strangers! That's what we're supposed to do I guess haha. Lastly, congrats on getting married! I hope you all love every minute of your life together!
ReplyDeleteJosuha, I loved reading your introduction! Starting off with how awesome your wife is was absolutely precious. I am also a Christian and love that you included that so strongly into your introduction. I definitely would not be where I am or who I am today without our wonderful Lord! I have never read the Harry Potter books but maybe one day I will have someone else to read it with also !
ReplyDeleteHey Joshua! Congrats on getting married almost a year ago now! That is so exciting! I am so happy that you were able to find a church family during college. I've seen so many students get wrapped up with the stressful life of being in college, that they forfeit their time of worship. It is also so difficult to find you way into a new church family. I was lucky to finally find First Presbyterian church two years ago after several church hopping experiences!
ReplyDeleteI haven't commented on your introduction. I think it is so sweet that the first thing you talk about is your wife and how lucky you are to have her. This is so cute! I also like that you spend your spare time with her. I'm sure she appreciates this. Congratulations on getting married and good luck to you and your wife in the future! :) and you will LOVE Harry Potter!
